Like other detritivores, the ecological role of BB and all Spanish orange isopods in the wild is to break down organic matter like leaf litter. As the isopods are decomposing nutrient-rich leaf litter, they produce feces that accelerate the decomposition of nutrient-poor leaf litter, further relieving the ecosystem of excessive organic matter buildup.
